| Title: A Verse by Verse Study of Colossians. Lesson 29 – Seeking Jesus Christ and those things above. Text: Col. 3:1 - 4 A. Introduction 1. Paul has said much concerning Jesus Christ and making Him preeminent in or lives and worship, but now he moves on to performing this belief in our lives. So many today believe in truth but refuse to apply them to their lives. 2. Titus 1:15-16 "Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. (16.) They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. 3. True Christian faith means one seeks things above. James 2:17-19 "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (18.) Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. (19.) Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." 4. Being a Christian means being like Christ and living like the devil is not being like Christ. B. V. 1a "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above," 1. This is a continuation of Colossians 2:12 "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead." To be buried we must have died, to be buried with Him means we must have risen with Him, baptism is our show of this. 2. Romans 6:4 "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." 3. Albert Barns said "as Christ now lives in heaven, they should live for heaven, and fix their affections there." C. V. 1b "Christ sitteth on the right hand of God." 1. This is where Christ is, He is not in the grave. Mark 16:19 "So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God." 2. Where Christ is where our hearts and minds should be. 3. Paul goes on in V. 2a "Set your affection on things above," This means to exercise our minds on where Christ is. 4. Let’s remember Paul said earlier Colossians 2:20 "Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances," 5. The Life Application Bible Commentary said "Thoughts can influence actions, so if the believers would place their thoughts above and not on the earth, their actions would please God." D. V. 2b "not on things on the earth." 1. If our minds and hearts are focused on things above where Christ is then it is not focused on earthly things. 2. Worldliness is focus on wealth, honor, and pleasures. We should not focus on worthless enjoyments. 3. Paul goes on in V.3a "For ye are dead," Paul means we are dead to this world is its pleasures. 4. We are dead to sin. Romans 6:2 "God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" 5. Paul goes on in V. 3b "and your life is hid with Christ in God." The word "hid" means concealed which means our hearts and minds are in heaven with Christ, what we have is not seen in this world but rather secured in heaven.
